Employees join companies, but leave bosses. As the economy starts to improve and companies start hiring again, many organizations are at risk of losing their best talent. Now is the time when the effectiveness of your managers will determine how much talent your organization will retain. Before the improving job market seduces your best and brightest, you should ensure your managers have the leadership skills necessary to keep your employees engaged and productive.

PAS’ Human Resource Services division offers a tailored Leadership Learning Series that teaches managers the critical skills they need to develop and retain key talent. The courses are offered as a series, building upon progressive skill sets learned in the previous sessions to grow your leaders’ skills and maximize retention of the material.

Our expert consultants help you select the right mix of leadership courses for your organization and tailor the material to your audience. Your managers get the skills they need when your organization needs them the most. Choose from several primary and advanced course modules:

PRIMARY COURSE MODULES

Role of the Leader

To effectively manage employees, leaders need to understand what their role is and what it is not. Too many leaders get caught in the trap of doing their subordinates’ work and neglecting their own management responsibilities.

Communication & Listening Skills

Communication is the foundation of all leadership competencies. Without the ability to clearly communicate expectations, feedback, goals, etc., managers and the organization are severely handicapped.

Goal Setting/Expectations

If you don’t care where you are headed, any road will take you there. If you are being held accountable for results, then you must have a clear idea of where you are going. Leaders need to be able to align the actions of their teams with the overall direction of the organization.

Coaching for High Performance

One skill that differentiates great managers from all others is their ability to effectively coach employees. Different from directing behavior, coaching is geared at developing the employees’ ability to solve problems and make decisions on their own.

Managing Conflict

Conflict is an inevitable part of any work situation. Unfortunately, it is usually viewed as a negative part of working with people. In this module, participants learn how to make conflict constructive and an asset to productivity.

ADVANCED MODULES

Motivating Your Team

One of the core roles of a manager is harnessing the energies and talents of the team and focusing team members on their work. However, motivating performance is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. Team members may be motivated by very different things. This module will explore the roles influence and motivation play in managing people.

Now is the time when the effectiveness of your managers will determine how much talent your organization will retain.

Flexibility & Change

As organizations constantly change and adapt to personnel and operational changes, they need better strategies for managing people. This module covers the concepts of managing planned change and the main “derailers”.

Building Effective Teams

As work gets more complex, the need to work cooperatively on teams becomes more important. From task forces that are formed to address specific problems to partnering with other groups, the ability to be an effective team member and provide leadership in team settings is crucial. This session will introduce you to the concepts of team development and review strategies for improving team functioning.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

It seems like the majority of a leader’s job is to solve problems and make decisions. The ability to execute these core job functions is often what determines a leader’s success. This module will examine problem solving and decision-making processes and teach leaders best practices to build their skills in both areas.

Partnering and Collaboration

Work teams do not work in a vacuum. They must constantly coordinate and adjust to the needs of other groups inside and outside the organization. It is at this interface that problems can occur. This session takes the notion of “customer focus” to a new level, looking at the role of partnering with internal and external stakeholders.

Interviewing and Selection

Poor hiring decisions are costly. Sorting through applicants to find the one who is the best fit for your organization is challenging. This session will entail a “hands-on” approach to the issues and tools inherent in the employee selection process. Participants will learn how to use the selection process to interview, select, and retain the best talent for their organizations.

Planning & Prioritizing

Leaders are often challenged by the volume of activities and deadlines they are asked to manage. Identifying and managing priorities allows leaders to assure their subordinates are working in unison to achieve the most important goals of the organization.

Strategic Thinking

The ability to effectively lead functions, divisions, or entire organizations depends upon the leader’s ability to think strategically. Too many organizations get bogged down in the day-to-day operations and fail to make decisions that take into account the bigger picture and longer-term implications. Beyond strategic planning, strategic thinking helps leaders bring strategy to their daily work. This session for senior level leaders refines their strategic thinking skills and provides practical tools to move beyond tactical thinking.
